Michelle Obama Says Shes Worried About Her Daughters Safety From Assumptions By Police

As a Black mother, Michelle Obama is still very much worried about her daughters even after Derek Chauvin was found guilty of murdering George Floyd. While she did breathe a sigh of relief at the sentencing since it proves that justice can be achieved, she still ‘lives in fear.’

The former First Lady is worried that her college-aged daughters could just be driving and become the victims of ‘assumptions’ by police, as it often happens to the Black community.

During an interview for CBS This Morning with Gayle King, which is set to air in full on May 10, Michelle shared her thoughts on the Chauvin conviction and more in a newly released clip.

‘While we are all breathing a sigh of relief over the verdict, there is still a lot of work to be done. And so we can’t sort of say, ‘Great, it happened, let’s move on.’ I know that people in the Black community do not feel that way, because many of us still live in fear as we just go to the grocery store or worry about walking our dogs or just allowing our kids to get a license.’

At this point, she revealed that Malia and Sasha are indeed both drivers and stressed that this fact alone males the former FLOTUS very worried about their safety and even lives.

‘They’re driving, but every time they get in a car by themselves, I really worry about what assumption is being made by someone who does not know everything about them: The fact that they’re good students and polite girls, but maybe they are playing their music a little too loud. Maybe someone sees the back of their head and just makes an assumption. I, like so many parents of Black children…the innocent act of getting a license puts fear in our hearts. So I think we have to talk about it more and we need to ask our fellow citizens to listen more and believe us.’
